Caroline Powell riding Lenamore wins The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials 2010

I may be a little late with this blog post but I always like to think of the saying ‘better late than never’ and my how the time has passed us by these last few weeks!  This year, The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials was held from Thursday 2nd – Sunday 5th September at the prestigous Burghley House in Stamford, Lincolnshire – which also happens to be just a few miles down the road from us. As we do every year, we packed up our shop and relocated to Burghley for a week, where we took our brand new country clothing range for Autumn/Winter 2010 with top brands including Aigle, Schoffel, Barbour, Musto and Joules. We also took a selection of our wellington boots from Hunter, Aigle, Joules, Kidorable, Cabotswood, Muckboot and WedgeWelly and joined hundreds of other exhibitors – lets face it; Burghley wouldn’t be Burghley without it’s shopping! Anyway, on to the horsey action…

Last years winner Oliver Townend returned to defend his title with Carousel Quest, who gained 3rd place after the Dressage phase on a score of 39.2, he then rode a clear Cross-Country on the Saturday with just 0.4 time penalties but sadly had two fences down on Sundays Showjumping phase and finished a creditable 4th, leaving the winners spot open for a fellow competitor. Other contenders in the top 10 before the final day included two rides a piece for Brits Mary King and William Fox-Pitt, one each for Brits Francis Whittington and Clea Phillips, New Zealanders Caroline Powell and Clayton Fredericks and German rider Anna Warnecke. The arena went very tense whilst the last ten riders jumped their rounds; Mary King finished in 5th place on Apache Sauce and took the 7th position riding Kings Temptress, Clayton Fredericks (riding Be My Guest II) finished on his dressage score of 45.8 to take 3rd place in the final. William Fox-Pitt finished 2nd place riding Seacookie (William took 6th place with his second ride Macchiato) leaving the Winners crown to Caroline Powell riding the beautiful Lenamore (owned by Lexi MacKinnon), finishing on their Dressage score of 38.7! The pair also made history as Caroline was the first female rider from New Zealand to win the event whilst her partner Lenamore made history by becoming the oldest horse to have won the Land Rover Perpetual Challenge Trophy.
